Oh Why! Oberto? PDF Print E-mail

I just don't get it.

Oh Boy Oberto had the BEST product on the market in my opinion.  The Beef Jerky they used to make was salty and smoky and cut in to very thin bite sized pieces and could be purchased at club stores and grocery stores in huge bags for like $5!

Then one day the packaging changed to red and I saw the words, "Now With More Smoke Flavor!"
(they have replaced that wording on the current bag with "Natural Smoke Flavor Added")

Ever since the new packaging, the OhBoy Oberto jerky has tasted like chemicals to me.  It doesn't taste like it used to and the texture is now completely different.  It is now boring and bland on par with almost every other supermarket jerky  sm_cry

I even wrote them a letter about it to no avail.  Never even got a reply.

At any rate, there is one small consolation, the "white package" jerky is still available in convienience stores, but at a very large markup.  This tiny bag costs $2.

Why Oberto, Why!?   sm_confused  Please bring back the 1/4lb size of your original flavored jerky!

(rant over)

update!  I found the big bag in a store!  Woohoo!  Of all places, SportChalet had the Oberto Classic jerky in in a 3.5 oz bag!  They even had the original and peppered varieties.  Maybe classic is making a comeback!

p.s. if you want a good tasting beef jerky from the supermarket, give Jack Link's "Sweet and Hot" a try.  I think you'll like it!

Cris,

Go to Costco and try the Jerky they have there. I cannot remember the name offhand, but the bags are purple and yellow. I love the Teriyaki. They have Turkey and also regular flavor.
Hrm.

I have tried just about all of the various grocery/convenience store bagged brands. IMO, none of them are worth a damn. It seems like 'Taco Bell hot sauce' syndrome has hit them all (the phenomenon where a commercial brand lowers all the spice/pepper/flavor constituents so as not to offend the taste buds of the lowest common denominator).

The only ones still worth a damn are the jerkies you get out of the little cabinets, not in bags. And then, still hit and miss. :( It's gotten so bad that when I need my fix, it's usually to a 'kippered beef snack', because the jerkies are so shoddy. :(

(Note for record: no love over here for any teriyaki/'sweet and hot' brands. Over the fact that beef should never taste sweet, but even these types never live up to what's written on their labels.)
