When I thought of this website, one of the first things I wanted was a "Pickle of the Month."

In fact I tried to get that domain name, but it was taken.

But anyway...I didn't really envision a subscription based Pickle of the Month club, but more of a do it yourself variety.  We settle on a pickle, and then everyone tries it and reports back.

So with that in mind I present:  Pickle in a Can.

I had seen pickles in cans before, at the supermarket and in specialty stores, but was always afraid of them since you cannot see inside.  But one day, a friend of mine from Jordan brought me a can of "Mid East" pickles to try.

I wasn't expecting them to be good. In fact, I was expecting mushy sweet pickles, but I tried them anyway.

They were awesome!

The pickles were actually crunchy and not in the least bit sweet.  No sugar is listed on the labels at all in fact!  They are also REALLY garlicky.  This size can contains about 10 medium sized pickles, which I can easily polish of in an hour or so, in fact there was a time when I was going through about 3 cans a week!  Anyway, I have cut back considerably since after eating a whole can at once, I am left with "garlic mouth" for the rest of the day   sm_dead

The pickles are very different from the typical Vlasic store bought pickles, and a lot closer to homemade tasting. This particular brand is made in the West Bank, but there are other brands out there too.  I found this can at the Saman Market near my house.

For those of you who do not like garlic pickles, or that prefer a sweeter pickle, those are out there as well.

I found this one at Trader Joe's in Los Angeles.

It is a tall skinny can containing ONE pickle.  I used to call this my "emergency" pickle  Smiley

It even comes with a little tool to help you remove it from the can.

These German style pickles are much sweeter than I care for, but they also have a little bit of a kick, which I think may come from the onions.  I Swear I must have had this in my cabinet for at least 3 years, but probably longer.  But I must tell you, that I ate it this morning, at it was still pickle-y and delicious.

So, see if you can find some canned pickles, take some pictures if you can, and let us know what you think of them!!
