We went to the San Diego Wild Animal park last weekend, and on the way we passed a little side of the road fruit stand, but what really got my attention was this little white sign:

We were late, so we could not stop, but we promised ourselves that we'd stop after the park closed to check it out.

Well 5 hours passed, and I got my chance to check out the jerky.

The stand is fairly large as far as fruit stands go, and the produce looked really good.  There must be a lot of farms around Escondido.

They also sell Ostrich and Emu eggs, and empty egg shells.  It sort of reminded me of that old Michael Moore movie "Pets or Meat" but anyway...  Here's a shot right out of Jurassic Park:

I looked and looked, and never actually found any "Jerky" but I did find these sticks:

They taste good, like a pepperoni stick, but the thing is, dried sausage gets a lot of its flavor and texture from the animal fat, of which Ostrich has almost none.  I think it would make an excellent "Jerky" but as far as meat sticks go, I didn't really care for it.

On the way home we passed the nearby Ostrich farm.  I didn't get any pictures, but seeing the birds so close to the stand actually made me kind of sad.  I don't know why, I guess they were cute.  Oh well.  It's not like they are native to this continent- they were brought here to be farmed...

Anyway if anyone ever finds any actual Ostrich "jerky" (the kind that comes in slices) please let me know.  I'd still like to try it!

UPDATE!

I found out this past weekend that thye have ostrich jerky at Bev-Mo. I'll have to try it next time.
